Who said this?  Sound familiar?
« on: February 05, 2003, 05:09:17 PM »
"When one watches the Titans at play, their tremendous drives often make their seconds absurdly easy.  Holes of 440 yards are sometimes reduced to the drive-and-pitch variety, and their accuracy is often so machine-like that the game seems silly."

"If each year the manufacturers add length to the ball, it will be necessary, if we wish to maintain a championship standard, to provide for extending our courses also indefinitely."

"A hole of about 600 yards will occasionally be reached by two of xxxxxxxx's best shots, and these days there are other hitters of almost equal power.  Of course the ball has made such distances possible, and unless some regulation is devised, the ball will force us on and on in this mad race for yardage.  It is playing the Bolshevik with our golf courses - undermining old standards and forcing us to destroy annually a great deal of valuable property."

"Some regulation of the golf ball is bound to come as a matter of common sense no less than of economy; and when it does come the golf course architect will be able to work with much more certainty than is possible under present conditions."

"...it will be wise, wherever possible, for adding length in case it should later be required.  If the tees are placed so that one must walk forward and not back when approaching them, it becomes a simple matter to lengthen any hole."

Regards,

Mike

Maybe it's not but it sounds very much like one of MacKenzie's thirteen points.

MikeH:

If the manufacturers continue to lengthen the distance the ball goes every year, as you said, how do you suppose they'll keep those balls conforming to present USGA ODS rules and regulations? Balls that don't conform to ODS are ruled "nonconforming" by the USGA and put on their published "nonconforming ball" list and have been for decades.

Sorry, not my main man DJR, who by the way was jobbed in last year's Dead Architect's Survivor Series notwithstanding my futile attempt to invoke the Lazarus Rule :'(

Based on the use of 'Bolshevik', I'd guess the author is of British origin probably in the 20's - Colt, Alison, Fowler or Simpson come to mind. My guess would be Colt.

Screw the pro's! The game is for the Haversham's of the world not the pussies that can't get daddy's permission to play football.

I've read it, but can't quite place it.  I'm  certain it's British and best bet is Colt.  The player is either Braid or Vardon.

I would say Rees' Daddy (RTJ).  Nobody was coming close to reaching 600 yard holes in two when the likes of Colt, Darwin, Braid, Simpson etc. were still breathing.

Tillinghast?  Thought I may have read it in one of the three books on his writings.  Or was it Colt, in his book of essays on golf architecture?

These quotes are from Robert Hunter's "The Links," which I reread on a flight earlier this week.  I recall the x'd out golfer was referred to only as Matthews, but I don't have the book here at work.  I believe the book was published in 1926.

I was astonished how germane these 75 year old statements are today.  The issue hasn't gone away, but is it really any worse?

Regards,

Mike

I considered Hunter, but the Bolshevik comment threw me off. I knew he died a staunch Conservative, but I thought he still had Socialist leanings when he wrote 'The Links.'  Evidently had already turned over a new leaf, which might explain why he and MacKenzie got along so well.

Oh, Mike what are you doing? I haven't been on the site in a couple weeks, so I didn't see your thread. I just reread Hunter, and knew the answer. I was frantically scrolling down looking at all the wrong answers, and then you spilled the beans. I thought this was my one chance to look smart.

Wrong again, buddy. Your one chance to look smart was to leave the site and never return! You blew that one, too!

Welcome back.
