New River Dunes

So, #6.  Would love to know the back story on New River Dunes.  Looks like a lovely site.

The Golf Digest article said this site was originally planned for a Bandon Muni.

And if i'm looking at the right spot, looks like they could have enough space for another 2-3 courses.

I've been telling the wife for years I'd like to live on the Oregon coast, maybe its time to get serious! ;D

I wish they pick a "different" architect - I know the formula works: Kidd, Doak, Coore/Crenshaw, Hanse... but I would like to see Craig Haltom or someone similar.

How much bigger can Bandon get and retain the charm it has now?   Seems like they will need to build a whole separate compound on the new course site.

If anyone can pull it off, it’s the Keiser team. Just wondering where the limit is for Bandon.

I haven't been in years but does it really have the same charm it did early on?  I guess it depends on what charm means.  It costs $345 in the high season.  While I don't begrudge the place (Pebble is my favorite course) I have a hard time believing the vibe hasn't changed.

I figure it's kind of like the Open Rota courses in the UK.  Lots of rich guys on buddy trips.  Not bad just not exactly what I consider charming.  Certainly nice, quality product and well worth the effort.  I associate charming more with the second tier places that don't have droves of buddies trips, or the places that have great golf accessible to the masses.

I was in Bandon last week and no mention of this at all. Several caddies did mention the reworking of several holes and a new clubhouse/steakhouse at Old Mac. I’m not sure they need any more golf courses, restaurants, or hotels- it’s already a bit overwhelming with so much really solid golf.

I certainly think so.  I think Bandon has aged very well.   I just don’t want it to turn into Disneyland!

I was there in May to look at the golf course.  There will be a new clubhouse, but the changes to the golf course will be minor:  moving up the green tees at the 10th and 12th, adding a tee on the 11th, and shifting a fairway bunker at the 10th.  You’d have to know the course well to even notice.

We discussed changing two greens but no one wanted to cause that kind of disruption if it isn’t absolutely necessary - which, of course, it isn’t.

change is the only constant

"New River" Dunes is across the highway from Crossings, 11 miles south of the resort

Give it try for a few months first! I remember my first 2 months were heavy rain and winds every single day, then 4 months of blue sky, no rain, and more wind. The wind wears on you day in and day out. Probably best to live inland a bit and visit the coast when you have an itch.

I walked the trails at the New River Nature Preserve and if the land is at all similar for the golf course then its an incredible opportunity. If anyone deserves a shot at a new course in Bandon its obviously Gil and Jim. I think we're all missing out if the rumors are true but that is just my opinion.

I've been living on the coast since 2014, and you couldn't be more wrong about the weather here.  It doesn't rain every day in the winter, and the wind doesn't blow every day in the summer.  We get some of the nicest days of the year in the Nov - March stretch, there's a reason they call it Ban Diego.

For a while last month the best weather in the country was here on the coast, despite it being 100+ only a few miles inland.  But please don't tell anyone, we already have enough Californians moving up here to get out of the smoke and heat.

It will be interesting to see the plans for how New River Dunes will fit in with the rest of the resort's dynamic.  We already have a locals' course at Crossings, and I don't think that's what they have in mind for this one.
