Lost Dunes, Angels Crossing, Warren Course, or Dunes Club?
« on: September 08, 2004, 09:40:42 PM »
I have to be in that part of the world (SW Mich, Indiana) in a few weeks and am trying to plan a couple of rounds.  I think I'll have enough daylight to play 36 holes, but which two would you choose?

The two dunes are awfully close to each other...
I choose them.
Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

Brian,

I have only played the Warren Course of the four you mention although I have toured Lost Dunes and hope to play it in a couple of weeks.

I would probably play the two Dunes courses if I were you.  Notre Dame is a nice low profile course on a pretty flat piece of land that I thought had great flow to it.  They have a lot of holes that dogleg left which is perfect for me so maybe thats why I liked the routing.  The original concept of no pars listed on the holes has been discarded because when I played it the scorecard had the par listed next to every hole.  The only holes that could be considered half-pars are the 10th and 17th which are short par 5s of under 500 yds.  The course provides a real fun round but it won't kick your butt.  It was under 6,800 yds from the tips when I played it although they were building a couple of new back tees.

FYI:  The 17th at the Warren Course at Notre Dame now has a new back tee that makes this once par 4 1/2 hole now a legitimate full par 5. With the wind in your face it is now a very demanding tee shot. As far as the rest of your options go, I would second the "2 Dunes" option for 36 just because of their close proximity to one another. ( Both great golf clubs ) If you have the opportunity, try to make it to Angels Crossing. Angels Crossing ( Like Rustic Canyon ) represents what we ( and golf in general ) need more of: A great architectural design, that plays firm and fast and is affordable for everyone! Green fees: $38!!!! If you make it there, look up Jim Thompson .( Regular poster here on GCA ) He is one world class host!!!!

I second the recommendation to play Angels Crossing.  The course is interesting, the price is right, and I'd like to start talking about this course (and architect Bruce Matthews) instead of NGLA all the time.

The green on #10 is inspired by Royal St. George.  Bisected (tri-sected?) into three areas with ridges in the middle.  An element of luck is needed to get close to the pin... certainly one of those "rub of the green" type of greens.

I vote for Lost Dunes.  Tee to green, it is a spectacular layout.  Some argue that the greens are comically difficult, but what is wrong with a little comic relief on the golf course?  There are at least ten very memorable holes and not a weak hole on the property.  Probably most impressive from a design standpoint (not that I really know of what I speak) is how Mr. Doak arranged a piece of property that is divided by an Interstate Highway.  The result creates a need for carts to take you from the clubhouse to the tee, but you can tackle the course on foot quite easily.  Truly a marvelous place.

I'll be there playing the first weekend of October.  Dunes & Point O'Woods on Saturday then onto Chicago for Sunday/Monday.

If it is a ND football weekend you should be able to play very quickly at the Warren Course.  Although the alums won't be too happy after an 0-2 start so they may opt for golf instead.  :) :)
