What would be the must plays on PEI?  Figure one week on the Island.

Thanks.

Prince EDWARD Island, Jason. No "s" tacked on to "Edward".

As for "must plays"? The Links at Crowbush Cove immediately comes to mind. Otherwise, I have limited experience on the island.

I would suggest hopping over to Cape Breton and playing Highlands Links...........it is a wonderful tract.  As far as Prince Edward Island, I have heard great things about The Links at Crowbush Cove and Dundarave GC.  Good luck.......it is beautiful up there!

Jason,
Crowbush and Dundarave are the "must-sees" and there are a few other options on a lesser level. Cape Breton is a bit of a hike depending on where you are coming from. The ferry near Dundarave would make it a four to five hour trip, but definitely worth it.

Here are a couple of pictures

Wow, Ben, that carry bunker at Crowbush looks like the Mother of all Hell's Half Acres!  What a beautiful hole with the ocean beach on the right and that big cross bunker.  Any web links?  PEI looks like a great summer vacation.

Bill,
Here are links to the stories we did on the resorts and golf courses, as well as the photo tours of both courses (every hole with photos that size).

Played Crowbush Cove a few years back.  At that time it was about $50 American and had 5 stars from GD!!  The views were spectacular, as was the course.  There was not a weak hole and was most enjoyable.

Not a weak hole at Crowbush? That's being pretty kind, if you ask me. The 11th is generally considered pretty awful (it is a par five where you lay up on your second shot with a short iron and then go at the green from 200 yards out. Ugh.)
That said, I agree with Ben when he says Dundarave is great. Worth checking out the Green Gables course, just to get a sense of what was there initially, when Thompson routed it through the dunes.
Crowbush is still worth playing, but it isn't even in the top 10 in Canada, in my estimation. Take the time -- go see Highlands!

A week in PEI...

I haven't played them all, but here's a list of what's most talked about out this way for PEI:

Crowbush (Tom McBroom)
Dundarave (Hurdzan Fry)
Brudenell River (Robbie Robinson)
Green Gables (Stanley Thompson)
Eagles Glen (Graham Cooke)
Glasgow Hills (Les Furber)
Mill River (Robinson/Cooke)...[I think]

That list covers the Island's best - and gives you a great sampling of Canadian Architects

-Unfortunately, there are still a few notable architects who have yet to work on the Island, so you can't have 'em all.

- NOTE Brudenell and Dundarave are at the same resort. (Rodd Brudenell River Resort) Brudenell has 6 par 3, 6 par 4 and 6 par 5. The two courses are on the same property, yet look like two different provinces - pretty fun place.

Highlands Links in Cape Breton is about 3-4 hours trip by car from Charlottetown.

Have Fun!

A number of years ago we (family) vacationed at PEI - a marvelous place to visit by the way. At tht time we stayed in Cavendish (only guest homes and one 7-room motel there at the time) and the Green Gables House was the attraction and it was "surrounded" by the Thompson, Green Gables course.

I played it every day we were there - it was a hoot!

Not the greatest of courses but certainly noteworthy to play and see.

We wanted to get back to the US thru Cape Breton but timing the ferry was a problem so unfiortunately never got there.

This is really an excellent get-away vacation spot.
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

For those in the know, how's the weather likely to be the first two weeks in Sept.?  I imagine we should bring sweaters and long pants.

The weather could be just about anything. Plan for cooler temps, and bring rain gear just in case - you're not far from the ocean anywhere on PEI, so weather can change fast. This year has been breezy a lot - even more than usual.

That said - Once in a while, it gets pretty toasty in September, so bring a pair of shorts or two along. You may just luck out and hit a patch of that late warm air.

Personally, I like to have a thin marino wool mock neck on hand - good in the wind and rain and breathes well too.  ;)

Adam:

So how many months of the year are playable on PEI?  By playable I mean above 50 degrees F (although I'll play in anything over 40 degrees).

Thanks,

JKB

Jason,
Average temperatures are above 50 from May-October (65ish in Sept.) and that is about the length of the golf season.

I had fun playing at Crowbush five or six years ago -- though they, annoyingly, wouldn't let my young daughter ride along in a cart.

My higher recommendation goes to the inn about half an hour away, called Dalvay by the Sea: http://www.dalvaybythesea.com/index.cfm

I echo all of those who recommend getting thee to the Highlands Links.

Dan:

That Inn looks great, we are likely staying most of the time in a family cottage I'm getting the address to figure out logistics, is it worth a drive for dinner if we are not staying there?

Thanks,

Jason

Jason,

Go play Northumberland Links while your there, it's very cheap, very quirky; but a great deal of fun.

$35. Canadian at high season

One fantastic oceanside par 3 makes the course worth the visit alone.

GO PLAY HIGHLANDS!!!! The drive to the course (Cabot Trail) is more spectacular than any course listed above in PEI.

It's a long haul. If you take the Confederation Bridge back to the mainland, I'm guessing 5-6 hours.

I've never played Highland Links, but another Thompson course in Nova Scotia is my favorite, Digby Pines. What a joy to play!
