Olympic Lake gets 2007 USGA Amateur
« on: August 17, 2004, 03:18:19 PM »
Pinehurst slides to 2008 as the OC Lake helps out with scheduling consderations in the North Carolina area.

Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort To Host 2008 U.S. Amateur; Olympic Club To Host In 2007

Far Hills, N.J. – Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., previously selected as the site of the 2007 U.S. Amateur, will host the championship in 2008 and The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., will host the Amateur in 2007.

The 2007 championship will be conducted from Aug. 20-26, and the 2008 championship from August 18-24.

The Olympic Club was able to host the 2007 championship to assist with scheduling considerations in North Carolina. In 2007, the U.S. Women’s Open will be contested at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., in late June-early July.

Olympic, which recently hosted the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur (its eighth USGA championship), has been the site of four U.S. Opens as well as the Amateur in 1958 (won by Charles Coe) and 1981 (won by Nathaniel Crosby). The Lake Course and Ocean Course will be used at the 2007 Amateur.

The site of the 1999 U.S. Open and the upcoming 2005 Open, Pinehurst No. 2 also has been host to seven other USGA championships. Pinehurst No. 4 will also be used for the first two days of stroke play.

The U.S. Amateur is the oldest of the USGA’s 13 national championships, with the first Amateur conducted in 1895 at Newport (R.I.) Country Club. Past winners of the Amateur title include Arnold Palmer (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1959, 1961) and Tiger Woods (1994-96). Two of the last five Amateur champions have been winners on the PGA Tour – Matt Kuchar (1997 champion) and David Gossett (1999 champion).

Prior to 2007, the Amateur will be played at Winged Foot (N.Y.) Country Club from Aug. 16-22, 2004; at Merion (Pa.) Country Club from Aug. 22-28, 2005; and at Hazeltine (Minn.) National Golf Club from Aug. 21-27, 2006.[/i]

I thought the Women's Open was at PN in 2006? Did I miss something? I thought the Sand Hills had a USGA event three consecutive years?

Women's Open at Pine Needles is 2007.

Not sure what logistical challenges they are expecting, as the events are a month apart, the US-Am isn't a big logistical event (not many fans to handle) and housing is available at that time because it's the low season in NC.....it's a little hot & humid that time of year.

...and this now means I'll need to keep my game in shape for 4 more years (instead of just 3) to have that valuable "home state advantage" over the college and AJGA kids  ;)
