Bob:

I certainly won't forget what you told me about your visit to Cumberland and Lucy. You know a ton more about that island then I do, that's for sure.

When I said Tom Carnegie burned down that house in a drunken stupor I was just joking. It was his own house in St Augustine, I believe, he burned down unfortunately killing him.

That entire sea island area in both North Florida and southern Georgia has a ton of terrifically interesting history of all kinds. Yes, I was told on my visit there about Lighthorse Harry. If I'm not mistaken his grave is near the old burned mansion. I believe I walked by it on my trek around the island with my wife last year.

I didn't know there was an old golf course on Cumberland and even though it's gone now it would be interesting to find out about it and who built it. That reminds me of the Ribalt Club on St George's Island across from the Naval Base below Amelia Island. You can just make out the old fairway corridors now and some of the old overgrown greens and tees. Apparently it was a Ross nine hole course for the rich and famous. The clubhouse of the Ribalt Club has just been restored by the State of Florida---it's a most interesting style of architecture and it has great style---but the whole place is very spooky.

I agree with Rich about the rough - the course is hard enough in a wind with the challenges set by the architect. But Steel's challenges are heroic whereas those set by the maintenance regime are penal.
It is a good course but not in the same league as Dornoch and even against Brora, given ten rounds  I would divide them 6-4 or even 7-3 in favour of Brora.

Rich, As you know I have only played Skibo once and it was in the best of company. Allen Grant is the host of all hosts and a friend to cherish. I really found most of the front, 3 to 7, to be the weakness in the course. It is hard to really take the last few holes too seriously either but they are beautiful and fun. I just felt the weak front nine holes,  inconsistant grasses, distance between a few holes on the front and the holiday course finish kept the course from being taken as much more than a nice part of the Skibo experience. I am not sure much of that was addressed in your notes on the renovation. I for one, loved the old club house. I can only imagine how nice it is now. Skibo is something we all should experience, but I would never miss a round at Dornoch to play there.
