Egads--Trump at French Lick Springs!
« on: July 23, 2004, 05:59:08 PM »
It's been a while since I've posted (started back to school last fall), but I saw this and had to log on.

Looks like Trump has signed up to take over French Lick Springs in Indiana (and add a casino).  Fuzzy Zoeller has been brought on to oversee "improvements" to the golf course.  Here's a quote:

The plan also includes $1million in improvements to a golf course at the French Lick Springs Resort that was designed in 1920 by renowned architect Donald Ross.

Professional golfer Fuzzy Zoeller of Sellersburg has signed on to oversee the development's golf program and said yesterday that the revamped course he envisions will be a destination for golfers across the Midwest.

Me to Fuzzy:  leave the greens alone!
Question:  anybody familiar with Fuzzy's work?  I've played one of his courses (Timbergate) and was less than impressed (much containment mounding).  Has he ever done restoration type work?  Is he just a name or does he do actual design work?  I guess the real question is where will they put the waterfall?  ::)

You need to talk with someone familar with what he did at Forest Oaks in Greensboro prior to DL3 coming in recently and redoing the redo.  I think Fuzzy did something 10 years ago or so.  I have not heard much complimentary about what he did.

Loves group (our own Paul Cowley) did a great job there now though.  Watch the tour even this fall and I bet they will rave about it (especially in comparison).

This is a quote from an article about the DLIII redesign of Forest Oaks CC in Greensboro from the local paper:  "When Fuzzy Zoeller and Clyde Johnston redesigned many of the greens a decade ago, they pushed up so many of the complexes that it made Forest Oaks almost entirely target golf. With bunkers fronting so many greens, running the ball to the hole wasn’t an option."

The pros consistently berated the FZ greens with similar sentiments, and the field declined year after year, once his chnages were made.  The field last year for the DLIII course was the best we've had in 10 years, and hopefully this year will be similar (and early indications are good).

Hurry up and see this one...lack of bucks have left this Ross design pretty close to original...too bad, this one is unique.
Can somebody get in  The Donald's ear and pitch a restoration?
God knows in this depressed area he can gobble up all the land he needs for waterfalls and erupting  volcanoes

Thanks for the heads up on the Zoeller connection.  Looks like i need to get to Larry Bird Land for a couple of rounds this year before it is too late.  I am surprised that Larry Bird's group was overlooked for this endeavor.

From what I understand the casino courses don't do a great business here in Indiana, so I don't know why anybody would spend the $$ to "revamp" this great historic course.  To get this course to play to the casino crowd, it will have to be altered greatly.

And as many of you well know French Lick is in the middle of nowhere and will most likely have difficulty in drawing anybody to the casino other than the one- armed bandit fans.  But Indiana is convinced that gambling money is the answer to all of our government's fiscal problems.  But it sure has not worked so far.

Thank goodness that I still have my original set of blueprints of the Hill Course to look over so I will be able to remember how it was.

If Donald Trump, or any of his minions, should touch even one blade of grass on the French Like Hill Course, may the wrath of Zeus set his hair afire to burn for a thousand years.

Katz, you, you, you charlatan--you should either seriously self-medicate yourself or contact me and I'll put you in touch with some competent "anger management" consultant that some of my "hair trigger" fellow contributors on GOLFCLUBATLAS.com must consult regularly to be able to stay out of the penitentery on felony charges such as second or third degree murder! You stay away from Donald Trump's hair too---it's so damn bad it can fairly be considered magnificent as the ultimate in the far end of the spectrum of American excess and truly bad taste!

It was interesting to note that The Donald played in the recent "celebrity" tournament at Lake Tahoe and didn't come close to his handicap index of 4.4 (very recently, until "outed", "scratch").  The Rug isn't the only thing about TD that is bogus and sad.......

Rich

He believes he has the best rug in the world. The hairdresser visited the site of Trump's head over 4 times during development.
