GOLDEN HILLS outing, Sunday Nov. 14th
« on: October 21, 2004, 04:38:58 PM »
I plan on a little gathering at Golden Hills in Ocala on the weekend of the 13th or 14th.  Those who have indicated an interest in attending are the following:

John Conley
John Cullum
Pete Buczkowski
Alex Chehansky
Eric Felker
Steve Lovett
Joe Andriole
Steve Elling

All are welcome.  I will have more details shortly as they are getting back to me with a cost for golf and lunch.  Tentative plan is to eat while someone from the club tells us about the two year renovation, play, then have a drink upon completion.  Please let me know if Sat or Sun is better than the other as I have not finalized that yet.

Additional golf in the area is up to you and I can recommend El Diablo, Golden Ocala, the CC of Ocala, and the World Woods or Black Diamond trek if you are looking to the SW.  Also, the renovated U of F course is just up the road.

My guess is that it will come off with 2-4 foursomes and that we'll come up with some type of social game.

Rees Jones himself will be "reopening" the club on November 10th just a few days prior to our visit.

Check back for this thread in the coming days for the final details.  I'm guessing we'd tee off between 11:30 and 1:00, but we really are at the mercy of the club.  They will be letting me know shortly.

How much will it cost?

The club has confirmed a fee of $50, inclusive of golf and lunch.  A good deal and that price hopefully won't prohibit anyone from making it.

Tee times start at 12:00 Noon on Sunday the 14th of Nov.

Please start with the confirmations if you are able to do so.

An early lunch followed by golf on a great course.  $50 all in, although there will be a surcharge if we pass a hat to tip the staff and decided to have an optional wager!

I hope those who have indicated an interest can in fact make it.

John,

Sorry about not catching this thread sooner...I have been AWOL lately.  Thanks for setting up this outing; count me in for the 14th.  If anybody is going straight from Orlando I'd be happy to share a vehicle (can't spend any additional time on Sat or Sun morning though).  I hope there are enough players so Alex can avoid my group and still be under the illusion that I can play golf!  :)

BTW I played the Dunes @ Seville two weekends ago.  My wife & I enjoyed our time.  Though, we can't help but wonder what it could have been.  Hey, for $30, its a fantastic bargain, but I probably should have played it before WWPB instead of after it.  Or was it that I couldn't keep my ball out of the trees?  ???

What are the current conditions of Dunes and WW?

By the way, I'm in.

Sarge:

Great!  I've wondered if those who were interested were going to be able.  No Gator FB at home that weekend, so there's one excuse out the door!

Looking forward to finally meeting you.  Feel free to invite a friend if you think they'd enjoy the day.  You can sell it as a return-to-glory renovation undertaken by the Open Doctor.

To all:

Keep checking here for details on this outing or call me at (407) 718-8390.  I will be precollecting checks since the golf course is really working with us on this.  When we get to Nov. 9th, they can be mailed to me at:
....JOHN CONLEY
....522 S. Phelps Av.
....Winter Park, FL  32789

I do not want them beforehand.  Make out to "Golden Hills C.C." or me.

Also, is anyone going to assume the camera duty so we can get some pics up on the site?  Looking for a volunteer.

What are the current conditions of Dunes and WW?

Hey Sarge,

WW was in great shape - best I've ever seen.  They lost about 1000 trees over the whole property; the only missing strategic tree that I noticed was on the par 5 6th (the one 40 yds short and right of the green).  Now you can go at that green with less fear.  The greens at WWPB were even better than at RO.  The short course and the practice holes were still closed.  I think they began overseeding on PB early last week.

The Dunes was in pretty nice condition; only a couple of greens had bare spots.

So who is planning on coming?

Those from this board who have indicated an interest are Cullum, Buczkowski, Chehansky, Felker, Lovett, Andriole.  I will be getting the club a number later this week.

Looking forward to it and finally meeting some of these guys.

I fear the Cuscowilla trip was too expensive in marital capital. My wife has conjured up a weekend plan that includes me. So it looks like I'm out.

Never heard from Chehansky or Lovett.  I'll assume you are out, but call me at (407) 718-8390 if it changes.  Ditto Dr. Andriole, who I'll assume is in the midst of yet another great exotic golf trip with his lucky son!

Sorry that the day didn't work for you guys.  I thought it was a chance with about two months notice, but we're all so busy I'm not surprised.  This (time) is why the game doesn't grow, not poor architecture.
