Tom MacWood,

I would submit that the Somerset Hills redan looks different, is structured differently and plays differently then the redans at NGLA, Piping Rock, The Knoll, Yale, The Creek, # 1 & # 8 and Shinnecock.

Paul Turner,

I'd agree, and I like that fortress like battlement as a feature.

I agree that the redans mentioned all look quite different from one another although many of them have the same basic choices in play---to hit a tee shot over or somewhat over a guarding bunker to a tilted green or around that bunker somehow using the tilt of the green or green-end.

For anyone to say that Shinnecock's #7 is a good representation of North Berwick's redan or even NGLA's redan really isn't accurate, though.

It would appear that the best way (perhaps the only realistic way) to play Shinnecock's redan is with a high fade if the green is firm and fast. This is not the best way, and certainly not the only way to play the others.
