A few months ago someone was nice enough to post some aerial shots of NGLA on GCA.  I've done a couple of searchs and been unable to track them down.  Does anyone remember where they are?
Playing there on TWednesday, anybody been out there recently and if so, how is the course playing?
Regards
Jeff

That would be George Bahto's work you are referring to.

I had his aerial picture as my desktop background for a while.  I don't know if George has been tied up lately, but Mike Sweeney might have access to the pictures.  Hopefully one of them will see this and be kind enough to re-post.  Good luck!

The color aerials that George posted have been taken down from the site they were posted from (not George's site and not taken down by him).  I know whose site it is, but he regularly takes down almost all pics after a certain amount of time, but I have no idea why, since web space is not an issue.

I'd love to hear why, though.

What is the deal with the little strip of turf maintained below the main 18th fairway?  It looks obsolete as actually playing territory, but looks like the most dramatic piece of grass this side of Cypress Point.

Andrew,
I think it is the practice tee.

Driving range, which if my memory serves correct was rediscovered 3 years ago. It was overgrown with brush and other fun stuff coming off the bay.

If CB had any imagination, he would have shit-canned his boring "Leven (NOT!!!)" 17th, and made that hole into a great "par" 4 1/2 hitting out to a seaside  green at the end of the driving range.  Then, 18 could have been a much better (also "par" 4 1/2) hole, hitting up the hill from the end of the curent driving range.

But, if you're into "replica" golf, it's hard to have any imagination.......... :'(

Post #10 is why, MERCIFULLY, you're not a golf course architect!! You're daily opinions on architecture alone are scary enough!!

Tom

What's wrong with my idea, other than the fact that it might display some imagination?

Rich Goodale,

While # 17 is an interesting thought, # 18 is superlative, just the way it is.

I wonder if CBM thought about your two concepts ?

Perhaps the length of your version of # 18 would have been deemed excessive at the time, especially with the uphill nature of the hole and the prevailing SW wind.

I've talked to TEPaul about moving the Gates, but I doubt he'll buy into your theory on moving the green, though it does look interesting in the aerial. ;D

I've had some (rt hand) hand surgery  recently is why I've been quiet lately.

grnadwazo: glad you liked that picture .....    a $200 ck woiuld be good -  ;D
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

I accept your opinion, but I do think 18 has the potential to be the mother of all "Cape" holes if you move the tee somewhere onto the practice area.

Rich

PS--does Tom Paul still own the MacDonald gates?  I thought I had heard that he lost them to Fireball Roberts in a game of 3-card monte in the late 60's..........

These pictures are very out of date now.  NGLA no longer has any trees on the course.  They were all taken down last winter.  Also, there are two new back tees...on 14 and 18.
