The Fuji course at Kawana
« on: May 25, 2004, 11:06:20 AM »
I am fortunate that I recently spent some time on the Fuji course at Kawana, in Kawana, Japan.  For those not familiar with the course, it is an Charles Alison course built on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean.  As has been noted Alison built at least three noteworthy golf courses in Japan, including, Hirono and Kasumigaseki.
I really can't say enough about Kawana, and have to applaud the resort for making relatively very few changes to the course over the years.  Other than some new tees, some of which really stand out, and changing some fairway lines the course seem remarkably intact compared to what Alison built.  I love the fact that the course has no irragation, and that the native grass Kuri( don't know if this is the right spelling) has never been dug up.   The course is built on brown sand, and the fairways have those wonderful roles and shapes only found on sandy courses.
The club has Alison's original hole diagrams displayed by the locker room, and seems very proud of its past.  Not very suprising for the Japanese culture.
I did take some pictures and would be delighted to share them if someone would tell me how to post them.

Dan,

Regarding posting pictures - try searching the archives. A lot of discussion was devoted to this issue when a webpage offered free space to post images on the internet. If you are not successful, maybe instant message Tommy Naccarrato, he seems to be very computer literate.

Dan, What was your opinion of the first four holes? Did you find the terrain in that section of the course to be overly severe?

I am going to scan the pictures in Tmmrw.. and see what I can do.
Nigel the first tee shot plays extremely donwhill, the second is a beautiful par 4 along the coast and is not that severe while the 3rd and 4th work up and down fairly severly again.  I was really impressed with the routing.  While some of the topography is extreme, the golf is not.  There is not a weak hole on the course, and there are some fabulous golf holes.
