For those who don't know, the stated par is actually 4-3-4.

Has anyone ever gone 3-2-3?  What would that be called:  "Quit Now Because the Game has been Conquered"?


Frank - that course sounds cool to me.  As for how this effects rating and slope, it would wholly depend on what the holes are like.  In general since it should work out shorter, one would expect each to be lower.  But it easily could go the other way, with above-average difficulty on the fives and threes.

That's the layout at Mississippi Dunes in Cottage Grove, Minn., a course Dan Kelly and I used to play a lot when it first opened a few years ago.

The course designer tried a lot of different things with that course, including building up most greens into flat-topped mesas. Some of it works, some of it doesn't, but it is different.

You want demonic? Play Mississippi Dunes in a stiff wind -- a not-at-all-uncommon condition in these parts.

IMO, way too many of the greens are way too near-impossible to hit and hold with an aerial shot -- and way too many of those greens are elevated via slopes too steep to accommodate a running shot.

The 6-6-6 arrangement has nothing whatever to do with the hellishness.

I played Royal Dornoch for the first time in the company of Jim Simpson, Minister of Dornoch and Captain of Royal Dornoch that year.  He started 3-2-3.  His philosophy was that if you didn't get a 2 on the 2nd the best you could hope for was a 5.  

Some day I should tell you the tale of how he rescued the USGA and R&A from financial ruin, but perhaps not yet.....
