It was telling about Bill, the winner, that he chose to stay in Chitown.

I didn't watch the show, I just heard the results this morning on the radio while stationed here in beautiful Tallahassee ...

The also mentioned that Bill is from Chicago so maybe the allure of building a hotel in his home town was key to his decision ...
"... and I liked the guy ..."

Given the current state of the golf business, Bill made Trump's choice look good by turning down the golf gig.

I would have taken it, but then again I'm the kind of guy who puts in an an hour or two a day at GCA, when I could be trying to make money instead.

Bob,

What is a mountebank?

Mike,

Main Entry: 1moun·te·bank
Pronunciation: 'maun-ti-"ba[ng]k
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian montimbanco, from montare to mount (from--assumed--Vulgar Latin) + in in, on (from Latin) + banco, banca bench -- more at BANK
1 : a person who sells quack medicines from a platform
2 : a boastful unscrupulous pretender : CHARLATAN
- moun·te·bank·ery  /-"ba[ng]-k(&-)rE/ noun

THere is no word more fitting.

It is more like a new Sears Tower or John Hancock building the way Trump described it.  It is a skyscraper with a hotel.

PS, Trump's team shot 18 under to win the charity (scramble I presume) golf tournament.

Mike B, He was on the Today show and stated he couldn't leave home.

BobH,
Never knew it was qualified. I just thought it was "under estimating the American Public".

Mike Hendren,

The golf course industry in Texas is such that I am sure that you would prefer building a hotel in Manhattan than managing one of several I could point to.

In as far as the Donald, his hair, and his course, we are still talking about him and he is having the last laugh.  A self-promoter, mountebank, etc., a lout he is not.   And along with the likes of Heff and Teddy Kennedy, he seems to have led a most exciting life.  I think that he is a very good golfer, playing near scratch much of his adult life.

I just laughed when Trump made the 3 footer and exclaimed Birdie! So businesslike and hurried...

I love their website FAQ - Do you have a driving range?  Answer: We would like to provide a range very much, but currently we do not have one.

I mean, you could just say "No" hahahah

So, does ANYONE want to get together to play 36 or 54...uh, I mean 30 or 45 holes at Ocean Trails sometime in the next couple months???  120 bucks for unlimited weekend play.

Guys,

this guy set out to do when he made that statment.  He got people talking!  He's not dumb, he knows this course is not as nice as Pebble, but by saying that how many people do you think he got to make a trip out there to see it when it opens?

I also think in his heart he has to know that Trump National Briarcliff Manor is not as good as Winged Foot or Shinnecock, heck I think Trump even belongs to Winged Foot, or at least he used to (according to GHIN).

But he is a salesman, and if there's one thing he can do its sell.

I for one loved the apprentice, even though it was a free advertisement for all of his companies, I thought the drama was even better than any of the reality shows.

Also with regard to it being the best course in California- better than Pebble- i seem to remember Trump raving that the Briarcliff Manor course is better than Winged Foot. Do you think he really thinks that or he just says it for the press?

The problem is that many people, including that gal who referred to men in their 'golf uniforms', get their information these days from people like Trump.  They actually believe his diatribes.

Yeah, that thing was ridiculous - (and does bear a surprisingly accurate resemblance to the American side of Niagara, now that you mention it ;))

I saw a story where Trump was relieved that Bill chose the Chicago job.  Trump just hired someone a couple months ago for the Ocean Trails job and this guy would have had to be reassigned if Bill picked the golf course job.

Like others have said here, I told my wife that the GCA'ers would be talking about his comments the next day. She just rolled her eyes and gave me that "look".   It means I can enjoy my GCA stuff but forget about 'splaining it to her.

Funny thing is- he is a member at Winged Foot!

Trump claimed that Briarcliff Manor was the best course in NY...  Evidently he hasn't been invited to play NGLA, Winged Foot, Shinnicock, ect.

Lou,

I'd still take the golf business over the hospitality/lodging industry, though in both cases it's the third owner that turns the first profit.

AP quotes The Donald as saying:

"In a way, I'm very happy he didn't choose the golf course, 'cause I put someone there about a month and a half ago, and they're doing a great job,'' Trump said after the Thursday night broadcast. "It could have been a little bit embarrassing."
