Give it up for Phil Mickelson
« on: April 11, 2004, 06:17:06 PM »
No one has taken more crap about 'Best Player never to win a Major' than Phil Mickelson.  Today will shut up everyone.  How much better could someone have played than Phil did on the back 9...

Wow!

Great golf, great champion, and great golf course.

Wow!

At the King's Putter I predicted that Phil would win the Masters and everyone laughed at me.  The jokes on you guys now, suckers!

That was one of the two or three best Masters finishes ever.  Congratulations to Phil for getting the monkey off his back.

Why ANYBODY would rather watch Tiger stroll to victory instead of a Masters like that is beyond me. That was, quite simply, fantastic. And what a way to win your first major, no matter who you are. We should all thank Phil (and Ernie, and K.J., and all the acers, and Justin, etc. etc.) for giving us such a wonderful golf tournament to watch!

Cheers,
Darren

Is that just regional bias coming out...anyone who wouldn't get on a plane just to play 12, 13, 15, 16 and 18 after that finish...doesn't love golf, doesn't understand golf...and can just shut the hell up...no matter what part of the country they come from.

Ooo... During the Outside green jacket ceremony (airing right now on masters.org).. They asked members of different groups to stand... Both the R&A and the USGA had a couple of people wearing green jackets..

When the PGA and PGATOUR stood up, nobody was in green jackets...

jf

And yes..  Today was a great day for Phil :) Loved it while screaming at the tv.

Best Masters finish for me. Great tournament. Great course.

Phil was quite a ham in the Butler cabin, too ("Are you guys holding out on me? I want one of these." --grabbing at Mike Weir's Green Jacket)

Ditto all the exciting reactions already professed. I couldn't bear to go to evening church, taking a chance of missing what actually transpired! God is very understanding....

That was as special a Master's I have watched in quite a while.  I don't think the statment "The Master's doesn't begin until the final 9 on Sunday" holds more true than today.

What went on in that back nine was incredible.  Neither guy backed down.  The roars were coming out of nowhere, 2 holes in one in ten minutes!  In the back of my mind I was really debating wether I would rather see Phil par the last so we could see a head to head dual or just have Phil win it now.  I think it was bettter that he just won it there cause anything can happen in a playoff and it would have been Phil lose one in the playoff.

After seeing Phil win and walk straight to his kids I think back to Pinehurst when Phil was so close.  Phil had not had a child yet and Amy was days away from their first.  When Payne Stewart won he walked over to Phil and said "your going to be a father".  Phil surely will enjoy this victory more now that he could have his three kids and beautiful wife with him.

The monkey is off his back!!! Way to go Phil!

I am enjoying the fact that two guys who hit it from the right side have won it back-to-back.  ;D

Best one I've seen since Jack's last. Great play from the low amateur, too.

One of the best Masters ever. Great win Phil. The architecture of the course was there in spades as well.

As they say, it was Phil's time...a little maturity goes a long way, and Phil displayed it in spades throughout the tournament. An epic battle won on the last stroke. Great stuff.

It couldnt have happened to a nicer guy!!!!   I was beginning to get punch drunk rooting for Phil time and time again.  On the front nine it seemed like we were heading for another heartbreaker.

For Phil to win it finally was great, but how he won it was also great for him to silence the critics.  Amazing for him to shoot 31 coming in to win it.

Interesting commentary that what may have finally taught some dicipline was missing a fairway at a tournament partnered with his caddy and letting the team down.  That was an interesting tidbit to learn.

Great victory for a guy who shares my birthday June 16th.  Now maybe Phil can get a little Birthday present.  A victory on his Birthday week at Shinnecock Hills.

I have never been happier in my life for someone to win a tournament! Hopefully, this will "release" Phil and he will win several majors like Tiger did after he got his first.

Phil had "that look" in his eye all day today - and the grin to go with it!!!!!

didn't it look like that putt on 18 was just beginning to leak out a bit?? ..... and it looked like, from the look on his face, that he was surprised a bit that it went in?

If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

Today was one of the greatest Masters finishes that I've seen.  Interestingly, Phile hit 3-wood on 18 taking the bunkers out of play and leaving him an 8 iron instead of a wedge.  It paid off and I think we've just witnessed the final stages of maturation for one of the most talented ever.  I predict a career grand slam for Phil.

Great fun.  Most worthy champion.

Did Hootie and Fazio just get lucky, or maybe they really understand how golf is played today and the architecture which brings out the best in the sport?  Long live firm and fast!

Did anyone notice Ernie's reaction when he heard the crowd's response to Lefty's birdie on 18?  The "Big Easy"?  Absolutely not.  The man with the great fluid swing may be one of the most ardent competitors.  What a challenge he put on!

Lou,

The Big Easy was the The Big Safety on 17...after hitting one of the great drives of the tournament he played both his approach and putt way too cautiously...it cost him the tourney just like I called it in real time on the "boring" thread.   He didn't collapse in the normal fashion...but it was no less than a mental lapse at best.

John,

I think that is a little bit too harsh to say that Els cost himself the tournament by his play on 17.  At that point he knew he was 1 shot up, this was before Mickelson's birdie on 16.  His approach was right, he could not risk over cooking it and going over that green, that would have been death.  Also, it appeared he was in between clubs so that may have had something to do with it as well.

Els played absolutely marvelous and to say that he cost himself the tournament is not fair.  Phil went out and WON the tournament, Ernie did not lose it.

Jason,

I know it is harsh....but Ernie pulled a Chip Beck and underestimated the talent of his opposition and relaxed.  Perhaps Ernie had been reading the wrong press clippings...or GCA for that matter...and thought a back nine charge had been designed out of the course.   Nobody could ever play 16, 17 and 18 at two under...not with all those trees and rough.

JakaB,

Did the Utah Jazz "underestimate the talent of Michael Jordan and relaxed" when Jordan hit this Championship winning shot?

That birdie putt of Phil Mickelson's was a historic sporting moment that went beyond golf. Let's give him credit and leave it at that.

PS I did not have time to look for The Pass from Joe Montana to Dwight (last name) ?????
