'Golf Architecture' Magazine Issue 7 2004

The 2004 issue of Golf Architecture magazine, published by the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects, is currently at the printers and will be available in around 10 days or so.

The magazine this year is 80 pages plus covers and boasts some great course photography by people like Dick Durrance, David Scaletti, the Henebrys and Larry Lambrecht and interesting articles by such authors as Geoff Shackelford, Daniel Wexler, Paul Daley, Mike Wolveridege, Mike DeVries, Tom MacWood, Russell Talley/Noel Freeman and Graham Marsh.

Articles include Geoff's feature essay on Max Behr, Mike DeVries on Bunkers, Daniel Wexler's essential golf architecture library, Graham Marsh on his Sutton Bay course, features on Australian architects Walter Travis and Dan Soutar, reviews of Bel-Air and St Enodoc, the history of Royal Melbourne West and Woodlands, book reviews and much more.

In Australia the magazine will NOT be available this year in newsagents and can only be obtained through mail/internet ordering.

Tommy N is posting a copy of the Issue 7 cover photograph of Graham Marsh's Sutton Bay course in South Dakota and hopefully this will give GCAers a taste of the magazine.

Australian and other readers might be interested to learn that Mike Clayton has been elected to full membership of our Society at our recent meeting and we look forward to his future contributions to the Society and Golf Architecture magazine.

For those who haven't seen past issues, this really is an outstanding publication, an attractive edition very much worthy of our collective support (my own modest contribution to this year's notwithstanding).  The magazine has always been a serious architectural forum and never a vehicle for sales and self-promotion which, at the risk of altering Neil's thread, makes me wonder....

What would a similar publication look like if published by our American society?

For all who are thinking of buying this through their website.  They are currently not using https which means that your credit card information will be sent as clear text rather than encrypted.  You might want to think twice before entering it.

I wouldn't use e-mail either as it is even less secure.

Fax looks like the way to go if you don't mind the long distance call.

Mine was in the pile of mail waiting for me upon my return from the extended KPIII.  I've only had a chance to leaf through it, but Issue 7 appears to be outstanding.  Having just played Bel-Air, I am looking forward to "comparing notes".  Also, the articles on Sutton Bay, Royal Melbourne, and Max Behr are compelling me to complete my tax work so that I can sit down with the magazine for an extended period of time.  Thanks for the prompt delivery.

I recently got my copy and it looks to be the best issue yet. There is more interesting information on architecture in this magazine than most books. I've only read the Max Behr and Bernhard von Limberger articles--both fascinating. There is an old photo of Rancho Santa Fe in the Behr article, it looks like Rustic Canyon.

Can you see if the writer of the Bel-Air piece has some current pictures that he can post?  I am particularly interested in the entrance to #12 (Mae West).  I was so busy flaying away in the woods to the left that I missed noticing the changes.  I was also left on #11, and if there was an alternate fairway there at one time, I surely couldn't see it.

The redanesque #13, which you show and describe in the magazine, is indeed a beautiful hole, though you are absolutely right about the added greenside bunker on the right.  I hit one of my few good shots of the day, a 5-metalwood, to the right edge, and rather than kicking left toward the hole, the ball kicked a bit right and into the bunker.

Despite all the changes, I was very favorably surprised with Bel-Air.  I thought that the front side was gamy and fitted very well, and the second nine was fantastic.  Not having seen the course prior to many post Thomas/Bell changes, and not possessing the forensic abilities of some of our gca friends, I was not at all disappointed with the Bel-Air of today.

It was a pleasure and honor to be able to contribute to Volume 7.  The few people I've shown the magazine to have all asked me how they obtain copies.  I only wish there was a way to distribute them through pro shops etc in the U.S. as there is definitely a pool of people who would buy it and become interested in golf architecture.  Just the other day in Miami, I struck up a conversation with someone who has a huge love of architecture and a great library who never heard of this site and a variety of other sources.  Neil's magazine over here would be a godsend to many, besides the pictures and the interesting topics, the writing is top notch.

I especially liked the Royal Melbourne article in this year's addition as well as the Max Behr article and Tom MacWood's piece on criticism.

  What is the average time it takes for delivery from you over to the US? I am going on vacation soon and am hoping to have my copies before I go. I am checking my mailbox every day with great anticipation.
    Noel presents a great idea. Have you considered distributing your effort over here Neil? If you are interested I would be available to handle distribution over here on the west coast.

Neil and Paul Mogford have done a remarkable job with issue 7. The magazine continues to improve markedly each year, and is a significant contribution to the advancement of golf course design.

Anyone interested in golf architecture would be remiss not to order issue 7, along with the back issues. Honestly.
