Speaking of designer collaboration here's one of the most unique ones ever devised and the fact that it was never used just may be one of the biggest bullets dodged in golf arcitectural history!

It's a fact that just after Crump bought PVGC (his own money) in the fall of 1912 and before he went to work in early 1913 on his daily mission that lasted five year until he died in Jan 1918 a letter was sent out by H. Perrin connecting the initial money raising effort for course and club construction to the membership drive.

The offer was that for something like $1,000 you could design one hole! That offer was very quickly dropped and the rest is history, and one of the most interesting collaborative efforts in architectural history.

Tom:

Mike Keiser floated the idea to Ron Whitten about having a GOLF DIGEST contest to design each of the 18 holes at Bandon Dunes.

Fortunately, Ron told him that it was much too good a piece of land for that.

I've discussed before the idea to hold a "Scholars Roundtable" — in essence, a group of enthusiastic and learned people who would come together to dream up a course. This may approximate the many nuances brought to The Old Course by learned scholars of St. Andrews University.

No takers as of 9:37am MST, April 10th, 2004.

As far as the prerequisites for participation go, Forrest...

If you switch "learnED" to "LearnING", then I'm in.

Actually, as to the idea of a contest, have any of you architects ever posted a topo here and got the members here going on ideas for holes?

How 'bout having a little informal GCA thing?
