How does one acquire Iceplant?
« on: April 10, 2004, 11:30:37 AM »
I have a green and pitching area in my backyard and wanted to landscape the right side of it with sand and iceplant like one would find in Monterey.

The area is approximately 25 yards long and 8 yards wide.

Does anyone have an idea of where I can acquire a sufficient amount of iceplant (or even iceplant seeds) to cover this area?

Many thanks for your help,

Evan

Evan:

If you go out to Monterey they will probably give you a bunch of it for free.  Most of the golf courses there are aggressively trying to get rid of iceplant because it is not a native plant.  Spanish Bay had to promise to keep it out in order to get their construction permits.

I think that's kind of a bummer as for me [going to Monterey since 1974] iceplant was a big part of the place, just another thing that made the Peninsula different than other places.

Iceplant is an invasive-exotic in California.  Unless you live in South Africa, I would not recommend trying to establish it.  It will outcompete and suffocate any native species.  Consequently, it will destroy the habitat of any plants or animals that depend on those natives.

Of course, it is damn beautiful.  That's why people usually introduce invasive exotics to begin with.  In Georgia, Wisteria was introduced at Fruitlands Nursery for exactly the same reason.  Does anyone recall the historical significance of this nursery?  (I know--that one was easy.)

Evan,

They have all the seed you need for 3.00 a pack. Buy about a half pack, and watch your house get engulfed in the stuff. Also make sure you clean your clubs directly aferwards because iceplant WILL stain the finish on them. I'm sure Adam Clayman will be able to tell you some stories of this.

Approriately, the lyrics to Genesis' (Peter Gabriel version)Return of the Giant Hogweed. (specifically posted for Gib, Slag, and Tom Huck.)

Turn and run!
Nothing can stop them,
Around every river and canal their power is growing.
Stamp them out!
We must destroy them,
They infiltrate each city with their thick dark warning odour.

They are invincible,
They seem immune to all our herbicidal battering.

Long ago in the Russian hills,
A Victorian explorer found the regal Hogweed by a marsh,
He captured it and brought it home.
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge.
Royal beast did not forget.
He came home to London,
And made a present of the Hogweed to the Royal Gardens at Kew.

Waste no time!
They are approaching.
Hurry now, we must protect ourselves and find some shelter
Strike by night!
They are defenceless.
They all need the sun to photosensitize their venom.

Still they're invincible,
Still they're immune to all our herbicidal battering.

Fashionable country gentlemen had some cultivated wild gardens,
In which they innocently planted the Giant Hogweed throughout the land.
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge.
Royal beast did not forget.
Soon they escaped, spreading their seed,
Preparing for an onslaught, threatening the human race.

The Dance Of The Giant Hogweed

Mighty Hogweed is avenged.
Human bodies soon will know our anger.
Kill them with your Hogweed hairs

Evan,

Whatever you do, do not plant iceplant at home. It is invasive and just ruins the look of your heaviest sand wedge if not washed off immediately after recovery shot from the stuff. If it is for pure ornamentation okay, but keep it away from flora that your wife has planted.

Iceplant is prolific. I don't know that much about how to grow it, but I'm learning. The landscape archie for the city has offered us some of his. So Iassume, it can be grown in most other regions if it can grow here. It's a succulent so it don't need much as far as maintenance. Other than controling the spread. There's more than one variety and I'm particular to the smaller leaf (more brocoli-like looking stuff). The long fingered variety is the one that can be find on the peninsula courses and it will turn your white shoes a rare shade of amber and is very difficult to clean off after drying.

Playing shots out of iceplant, are not impossible, as has been reported. Grant it, one needs to consider carefully whether they should try to attempt to thrash-out, or take ones medicine (unplayable). In my experience, unplayables are the exception, not the rule. The shot requires a steep downward angle, like the explosion shot out of sand, and if any distance is also needed, a mighty way-lay, is definitely required.

Another way to acquire ice plant is to take any old plant and stick it in your freezer for a few hours ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Many thanks for all your suggestions-

My purpose would be purely ornamental, I would have little interest in hitting out of or walking in the iceplant.

I would like the same type of Iceplant they have on the Monterey Penninsula- so I may be best served as Tom said to call some places down there and see if I can obtain some for free-

The seeds mentioned are obviously very cheap at $3- my only concern is that it would be the wrong type.

Please correct me if I am wrong but the Monterey type of iceplant doesnt seem to flower as much as others?
