I don't find it to be that strict in terms of what Macan was trying to achieve on each project, Garland. I do know, mostly from his writings, that he was not a fan of three-shot holes. That's an obvious observation at most of his courses I'm familiar with. You don't find many big par 5s on Macan-designed courses. Quickly, off the top of my head, the only exceptions I can think of are the 7th at Inglewood, and the 13th and 17th (w/ new tees) at Overlake ... the 5th at Royal Colwood and the 15th at Broadmoor might have been long originally, too. Fircrest doesn't have any three-shot holes for consistently big hitters. But, interestingly, that doesn't make it an inferior course either. In fact, it's probably Macan's best.
