nregan,

hpphoto is a nice site for posting pictures, but it requires people to have access to your account to view the pictures.  so your pictures are not viewable.

you might want to try http://www.mysticcolorlab.com instead.

Brian,
The pictures are showing up fine on my screen right now, so I figured they'd show elsewhere. Are you getting any indication at all that there's supposed to be a picture ? What if I posted a password to the pictures, could you see them then ?

Does anyone else see them ?

The problem with Mystic and the other sites that I've tried so far, is that the maximum picture size is pretty small.

Neil, they are not appearing...it is the dreaded red X instead.  They appear for you since you have registered and viewed the pictures, so they are in your computer's cashe.

Neil, I see them and I am stunned by the quality of the large one.  The pixels don't seem to get blurred out at all.
That picture has got to win some sort of award.  It really beings out an emotional reaction.
I can almost feel the sea mist in my face spraying me from the computer screen.
You ought to copywrite that one.

Dick,
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you at least can see it, I hope others can too.
I printed it yesterday at about 30 inches wide, and the resolution is still there. (By the way, I did put a © in the lower right corner.) If you want a copy, let me know.

Neil

Gene,
 Nice drive.

The hole is a par 5 that turns right and follows the coast, but the angle is not as sharp as it may seem to be from the picture.

Neil, I know you probably told us the details when you first posted the pic but,
Can you describe the conditions and camera again: time of day, date, what camera and settings.

I could probably write a few volumes on just the landing zone
of this hole. But, besides being worthy, as Gene's post exemplifies,
what should be most educational to the pampered, is the turf.
Notice carefully all the textures and colors of the fairway grasses.
The clumpiness of the transition into the dunes.
All these "little" variables, dictate the proper playing of the hole.

The short Par 5 12th, with an in course
OB on the right,
(to stop corner crossing over the 13th, for safety) is as wind effected as any hole on the continent.
Look on any map and find
the last curl of the south tip of
the Monterey bay and that's
where this hole resides.

The large hump in the landing zone
is just one of the subtle features
 that decides fate.
The rolling fairway allows
the golfer to either use to great effect,
the wind, to get home in two.
 Or as a mentor-like nemisis,
the lie will cause the golfer to play prudently.
The false front oval green
forces perfection on approach
whether it be from 225, or 40.

Day in day out,
the pitches to this green,
from 80-20 yds in,
are the toughest shot demands
 on the golf course.

Neil,

Beautiful picture.

What kind of camera did you use?  Why did you slice/tile the image?

As it is copywrited, I apologize if I've asked proprietary questions.

Doug,

The AOTD of P.G. (linked above) was done by Mike Nuzzo in
my absence following the birth of my 2nd daughter.  Love
that shared fairway of 15 and 16.  Gotta really love the
location of the range, looking right into the ocean!  :o

Got to play there with my wife just over 8 years ago.

Dick,

The picture was taken last October at about 8am on a
beautiful morning. I used my Olympus 4-meg digital with a
powerful zoom, at these digitally approximate settings:
  Focal Length 63mm, F 3.7, 1/400sec, ISO 50

It's actually 3 pictures stitched together with Photoshop. I'm
getting better with that, but you can still discover the
seams. The colors are real, I did not alter them except to
match the levels of the three pictures. (And as you can see
from Tommy's post, Mike was in the original picture. I inserted
Gene's tee shot from the 14th for this version.)

Mike,

I had to slice and tile the image because my photo storage
site has a max picture size of 480x480 pixels. The picture you
see here on GCA is thus actually 12 pictures, totalling 2880 x
960 pixels. The original is 5245 x 1669 and prints about 2.5
feet wide with no loss of resolution.

What I’ve always liked about this hole is that from standing
anywhere in that picture you can’t see the green. There is a
large mound starting some 150 yards from the green (just
outside of the great pic) that crosses the fairway and hides
the green from anyone hitting their second shot. I’ve played
this course 100s of times and I still feel uncomfortable
hitting my blind second shot. Whenever I play it I always
end up wondering why golfers get so obsessed with seeing
everything in front of them.

I really dislike the O.B. between 12 and 13. I don’t think it
is really needed with the dunes between the holes. Seems
the last few times I’ve played it they have at least moved the
O.B. further from the 12th fairway.

Of course, I knew this about you after witnessing your magical "splash and toss" to two feet from out of the DA #8 Sand Hills! :D

Always amazed me how proficient you are out of those really deep bunkers where one can't see you. 8)

Pacific Grove aerial view.
The tee shot of the 12th aims towards the upper right edge of these aerials.
I'd say ground view is the better view.

I have never seen pictures like these last two.
Hopefully Rihc can see how the in-course OB is needed.
Cutting the corner makes the 12th play
fairly short and is dangerous with 90k+ rnds a yr.

Other interesting notes:
The 13th tee shot is one I
will never forget on my virgin trek.
I met up with some locals here
and joined their group.
As I stood on the tee I thought "split fairway, cool".
But one learns that left of the dunes land
 is not a prudent angle.

also;
The two round buildings
are now part of the maintenance facility
but at one time were perported to be batteries,
protecting the bay from the Japanese.
The end of WWII allowed the land
to be transformed into a golf course.
 Previously, Mr. Morse had his
polo ponies graze here.

Last thing of interest is
the smaller looking building adjacent
to the road at the bottom of pic.
That is the electronic lighthouse
 that sends the signal out,
 to warn ships.

While Pt. Pinos lighthouse is the
oldest operating on the west coast,
it is obsolete, in a practical sense,
even with it's original Fresnel lens.
The other building in the upper left,is NOAA.
