Some Tom Simpson sketches
« on: March 05, 2004, 02:26:12 AM »
I found these sketches on my computer. I don't remember where I got them, but I suspect that I downloaded them from GCA last year. If so, I apologize to the original poster for forgetting. But I think these will appeal to many here.

Neil

You got 'em from me!

Nice to see them back.  Blackwell is way up on my Hidden Gems, list to see.  The 12th? I believe has an enormous bunker that was once the longest in the country (I suspect the Anaconda bunker at Chart Hills beat it).

Paul,
Sorry about that, and thanks again for them. Tommy N. may post them later in a larger size. They certainly bear repeated viewing.

Did Tom Simpson have a hand in Serpentine, at Murcar, pictured below ? (I'm not sure where I got these pictures, either.) I think that Archie Simpson, in the picture below, is related to Tom Simpson.
Before I went to Scotland my first time, Serpentine was one of the holes that I wanted most to play.

nregan,

Spectacular sketches! Mr. Simpson was quite an artist, producing images that have a character and quality that is not duplicated today using computers.
I wonder how many other architects' sketches would compare favourably with these? Perhaps Mike Strantz.

Murcar is wonderful and the pictured hole is simply awesome. A great driving hole, but then again, that is a regular feature of most of the front nine.

Small wonder that when Coore and Crenshaw hired Jeff Bradley to be a bunker builder they showed him Simpson and Wethered's "Architectural Side of Golf".  And now look what Jeff's created with those pictorial ideas.
In case you haven't read this book yet, it is a treasure and available through Golf Classics.  There are dozens of eye-popping illustrations in that book and very direct with its design theory prose.
