Very interesting, nregan.

Is it the 18th?  Whatever it is, how did it evolve to what it is today, not in terms of surface, but in terms of shape?  I've seen some striking pictures from the same era of "classic" courses in Scotland which also had rectilinear greens layed over a flattish bit of rollling turf.  Some of these greens today are much lareger, curved at the edges, and anything but flat.  As far as I can see, no earth was moved to transform them from simple squares to green "complexes."  It was all done by mowing.

Was this the case at Pinehurst, too, or did Ross have to manufacture his humps and hollows and chipping areas, etc.?

Looking at the clubhouse, this could very easily be the green that currently serves as the large practice green (as opposed to the #2 green).  That green is essentially flat, like this one.
