Doak's Top 5 places to go (to or back) or anyone's Top 5
« on: July 26, 2001, 11:19:00 AM »
In an old thread where Jim Reilly discussed St. Endoc, Tom Doak commented that St. Endoc was one of his top 5 places to get back to...I would be curious to see if he reads this post if he would show us the list...Ran and  John have their "next 50" on the site, I would be interested to see regular GCA's put theirs up here..

Well, I'll play...

Top 5 to get back to:
County Down
Ballybunion Old
Pinehurst #2 (tough call between this one and Portrush)
Old Course
The Island (Dublin)

Top 5 to visit for first time:
Dornoch
Royal North Devon (due solely to this site -- it better be good, Ran and John!)
Sand Hills
Pine Valley
NGLA

Man, it's hard to leave out Merion, Shinnecock (can't combine it with NGLA), Machrihanish, and Pacific Dunes.  But I have a reasonable chance of getting to Machri and Pac Dunes.

A great post Leon as I am currently struggling this very evening with how to spend the remaining days and dollars/pounds in my golf budget for this year.  Do I go back to old favorites like Ballybunion and North Berwick or do I play other fine courses for the first time like Royal Lytham and Formby.  My current policy is that if I have the choice between an 8 I haven't seen and an 8+ I have, unless it's a limited access issue, I opt for the first timer, because there is nothing like your first time.

Before I go any further, here is my list in order of desire:

To see for the first time:

1. Cypress Point
2. National Golf Links (sorry guys, I'd make a pilgrimage for either Shinnecock or the National, so I'll list them separate)
3. Shinnecock (Scheduled for October; WoHoo!)
4. Pacific Dunes (could have gone this year with either Noel Freeman or the Bravenet Crew, but saving it for a pilgrimage with my pop for next year)
5. Pebble Beach

This is my honest list; there are a bunch of other courses that might be hipper to name, but these are the 5 I would most want to see.  Runners up include:  Pine Valley; Garden City; Chicago G.C.; Augusta; Merion (is it really ruined guys? I hope not) and Winged Foot.

Most like to return to:

1. Pinehurst #2 (It just gets better every time)
2. Sand Hills
3. Crystal Downs
4. Swinley Forest
5. TOC

Honorable Mention:  Riviera (my equivalent of Doak's St. Enodoc round as I shot the best round of my life playing as a two ball with my Pop on January 2 with only about 5 groups on the whole course; surreal, I'm afraid to go back); Ballybunion; St. George's Hill; hell, just about every links course I've ever played.

I'm sure Ed Baker will have some plagerized words for this:
I've basically been fortunate enough to play all the courses I've wanted to play and yearn to play again these five in exact order:
   1. Sand Hills Golf Club - the greatest golfing experience and golf course in the world.
   2. National Golf Links of America - along with Sand Hills, the greatest golf course in the world.
3.Cypress Point- you guessed it! The greatest golf course in the world along with the two above.
4.Pine Valley - the second greatest golfing experience in the world and maybe architectural perfection.
5.Royal County Down - the front nine is the greatest nine holes in the universe, bar none.

Courses I yearn to play:
   1. Royal Melbourne
   2. Kingston Heath
   3. Royal Dornoch (this September)
   4. Machrihanish
   5. Seminole

"...I don't believe it is impossible to build a modern course as good as Pine Valley.  To me, Sand Hills is just as good as Pine Valley..."    TOM DOAK  November 6th, 2010

Oh sh*t, I left out Cypress Point.  It goes in my top 5 to get to for the first time.  Royal North Devon reluctantly gets dropped to the second group.

My first post in quite awhile, and my-oh-my, how full of content it is...

To get back to:

Pine Valley
The Old Course
Kiawah (Ocean)
Lehigh
Pinehurst #2

Honorable Mention: Pete Dye, Inniscrone (I need to give this one another chance), Gulph Mills, Merion, Pine Needles, et al.

To get to:

NGLA/Shinnecock (I believe these two are on everyone's list)
Cypress Point
Myopia
Fenway
Fishers Island
The Honors Course

Well, I technically listed 6, 7 if you count NGLA ands Shinnecock as two separate courses (can you divide Heaven?).  Oh well, there have been bigger atrocities over the years, most which involve Cher and the Academy Awards.

Lovingly yours.

Andrew

Noel,

You have no idea how much it hurt to turn down Pac Dunes; well, maybe you have some idea, but Shinnecock alone has cost me trips to Rome, Stockholm and now a week in southern Spain without my sticks.  At least I'm fully paid up for our Long Island weekend and at least a couple rounds when you come back over in October.

John,

Just putting a bit of dyslexia for a little fun..i should have made the topic more complex to find out of the way places people want to go but you took care of that in your hidden gems...

as for WBYC, i will see for myself on 8/13
