Tillinghast book three, Gleanings from the Wayside
« on: August 22, 2001, 04:38:00 PM »
Got home today hoping to see Brad's Ross book on the doorstep, but instead found a copy of the third installment of the Tillinghast books compiled by brothers Wolfe and Bob Trebus, first glancing through it appears to have topped the first two and then some. Some incredible photos (so sharp!), maps, drawings and great topics by that big time genius Tillinghast. Many of the essays are from the old PGA magazine most of us have not seen. The map of Fenway will interest many here and the aerial of Brook Hollow is just awesome! Then there are the old California course pictures, and the map of Sunnehana raises an interesting question about his drawing style and how his bunkers were built. Oh boy, rambling, there's too much great stuff to cover.

Once I get Brad's book I'm looking forward to the Tillinghast biography. Guys, when do we get to see that!?   Congratulations on finishing the series and giving us all the chance to enjoy Tillinghast's work.

I've already emailed you this effect but I want to publically agree with everything Geoff said above.  Gleanings is tremendous!

Geoff,  Being new to this site, I am still in awe of the knowledge and course experience being thrown around here.  I often wonder if I will ever have the opportunity to play in such places like Merion, Shinnicock, Augusta, Cypress Point etc.

However, I have played Sunnehanna a few times, and only learned about Tillinghast recently.  For a newbie like me, what does your comment about Tillinghast's drawing style and bunker construction at Sunnehanna mean relative to his other works?

By the way, as a shameless suck-up, your books are quickly filling my golf library.  Thanks, Mike

Mike,
The Sunnehana drawing is interesting because its seems clear that the manner in which he drew the bunkers indicates that he wanted steep grass faced bunkers, with very few capes/bays ala San Francisco. Heavy shading around the edges, and more round in the Baltimore/Somerset style. It's just hard to describe, but looking at the map you can tell that right away. I guess that surprises me because you don't normally pick that up in a two-dimensional overhead by any architect.

It's also interesting to me and I think a few others, what Tillie had going on in that brilliant mind of his about bunker style. Why he went with a certain look at some places, and such a radically different style at others. The great thing is, he pulled if off pretty much everywhere he went.

Thanks for filling up your library, there are a couple more on the way!
Geoff

The book sounds fabulous. How does one get a copy? Didn't see it on Amazon.

I too just received my copy and would like to reiterate what has been said above: any one with a remote interest in Tillinghast should add this book to their golf library.

I am not sure how they keep finding such interesting material (like the day that AWT spent at No. 2 with Ross) but the Wolffes and Trebus deserve a lot of credit.

Cheers,

Jeff,

If you don't have the first two books, you join the Tillinghast Society and get all three for a great price. They are all must have books. I just read the Tillie essay in "Gleanings" about the need for a "Tale of Woe Committee." Classic stuff.

I'll reiterate what the others have said that these books are a must.

There's a magical and most quotable article in 'The Course Beautiful' called 'Giving Individuality to Golf Holes', which not only covers the importance of variety, but is wonderfully written. Can't get enough of it.

Jason.

Geof:

Thanks for updating GCA devotees on
how to economically obtain the set of
three books. What is the best method
of joining the Tillinghast Society?

Ps ... I am enjoying reading three of
your books at the moment; will get
around to your others as the year churns on.

Paul,

Check out the Association's website at www.tillinghast.net

As well a load of other useful information, there's a 'joining the Association' link.

Jason.
